Best Battery-Powered Toothbrush (Full Review)
Dentist Tested and Reviewed
Brushing habits are essential to promote healthy teeth and gums and prevent tooth decay.
The original manual toothbrush requires patient compliance to adequately brush at a certain pace to remove plaque and bacteria.
Other individuals prefer an electric toothbrush because it does most of the work for them. What is the best battery-powered toothbrush?
As an experienced dentist with years of experience, I’ve tested and evaluated 300+ dental products. I strive to find the best products for achieving excellent oral hygiene, so let’s take a closer look at the Best Battery-Powered Toothbrush from a dentist’s perspective.

- Eliminates need to scrub
- Encourages gentle brushing

- More enjoyable to use

Soft bristles are essential to limit gum recession and damage to the enamel surface, regardless of what type of toothbrush you prefer. When gum recession occurs, sensitive areas of the tooth are exposed and prone to wear faster.
Battery-operated toothbrushes offer various bristle styles and positions to clean different areas of the tooth. Finding the right toothbrush will take you closer to long-term oral health management.
Evaluation Criteria
I (Dr. Hannan) tested each product for 7-14 days, detailing its pros and cons, and rated it from 1 to 5 in four key areas.
- Effectiveness: Is the toothbrush effective at removing plaque? Did the brush head design translate to improved results?
- Comfort: Were the bristles comfortable on the gums and teeth? Was the brush head comfortable to use? Is the toothbrush comfortable to grip?
- Features: What features are unique to toothbrushes? Are the features effective and do they translate to improved oral hygiene?
- Likeability: Is the toothbrush likable and enjoyable to use?

Dentist Review
Pros
The One sonic battery-operated toothbrush is uniquely crafted and designed. It’s very comfortable to hold and extremely lightweight. It effectively cleans all areas, and the bristles are comfortable for the gums.
The vibrations are gentle, and most importantly, the toothbrush is eerily quiet. The travel case is a nice feature, and the replaceable brush heads allow you to change the head every three months.
Cons
The handle is sleek with ridged grips; however, we would have liked it to be thicker to prevent slipping. Also, the brush head may be a bit large for individuals with small mouths.
2. Best Budget | Colgate 360 Floss-Tip
Highlights
- Soft bristles
- 5x cleaning action
- Easy on/off button
- Floss-tip bristles for interdental cleaning
- Oscillating bristles of polishing
- Regular bristles for flat surface
- Angled bristles for cleaning gum line
- Tongue and cheek cleaner
- Comfortable non-slip handle
- Dual-action brush head
Results
Best for patients that desire larger brush heads and a comfortable grip.
Dentist Review
Pros
Holding this brush is very comfortable, and the on/off button is simple to use. The upper section of the brush head rotates while the lower section is stationary, leading to various areas being cleaned.
The tongue and cheek scraper is an added feature that aids in removing bacteria in the mouth. Soft bristles are always recommended, and the “floss-tip” bristles seemed to slide easier between the teeth.
The effectiveness of the toothbrush is adequate for a battery-powered toothbrush.
Cons
The gums are more prone to recede because of the rotating brush head. Vibration bristles would be more gentle towards the gum tissue.
Also, the brush head is large and may be difficult to clean around hard-to-reach areas.
3. Best Whitening | Colgate 360 Optic White
Colgate 360 Optic White is another innovative toothbrush less expensive than the Floss-Tip Power Toothbrush.
In addition, this toothbrush offers a more gentle vibrating brush head rather than a rotating brush head which may irritate your gum tissue after prolonged use.
Also, it’s more sleek and lightweight compared to the other toothbrush. Lastly, the bristle design offers stain removal benefits and whitening cup technology.
Highlights
- Soft bristles
- Sonic power
- Tongue and cheek cleaner
- Spiral bristles remove stain
- Polishing cups polish teeth
- On/off button
- Vibrating bristles 20k strokes/min
Results
Best for patients that desire vibrating bristles and whitening benefits.
Dentist Review
Pros
Colgate designed a great battery-powered toothbrush that’s very effective at plaque removal. The whitening bristles and polishing cups are great for those desiring stain removal.
The toothbrush is lightweight, and although the brush head is more significant than others, it glides over the teeth quickly.
Cons
This brush is not as comfortable to grip and may slip around. Also, the bristles are labeled as soft; however, they were stiffer than other brushes in the comparison.
However, there should be less gum damage because the bristles vibrate rather than rotate.
4. Best Travel | Gleem Power Toothbrush
Gleem was created to bring affordability and design to oral health. They believe you shouldn’t pay premium prices for a beautiful product.
Their electric toothbrushes offer user-centric details, just-right vibrations, and sleek finishes.
In addition, their product line consists of a battery, and rechargeable toothbrushes in various colors that are designed to “make your smile shine.”
Highlights
- Gentle vibrations polish teeth
- Built-in timer pulses every 30 sec
- Travel case
- Vibrating bristles
Results
Best for patients that desire a sleek toothbrush that’s travel-ready.
Dentist Review
Pros
Gleem crafted a beautiful toothbrush. The sonic battery-operated brush head is difficult to clean around hard-to-reach areas. The 30-second time is a great feature to notify you when to move between quadrants.
Also, the travel case is a great touch to protect your toothbrush from germs and damage.
Cons
Although this toothbrush looks excellent, it was minimally effective at plaque removal, and the bristles were stiff and abrasive to the gums. The bristles had no flex, preventing them from wrapping around the teeth.
Also, the toothbrush is sleek, but there’s no grip, and it may slip out of your hand.
5. Best Charcoal | Oral-B Pulsar Charcoal
The brand “trusted by dentists and consumers worldwide” offers many products to meet your unique oral care needs.
Oral-B is most well known for its electric toothbrush line; however, they have several manual and battery-powered toothbrushes.
They strategically place bristles on various aspects of the brush head to clean different areas of the tooth.
Highlights
- Soft bristles
- Vibrating bristles
- Infused with charcoal
- Whitens teeth by removing stains
- End-rounded bristles gentle on teeth and gums
- Brush head separates to clean around teeth
Results
Best for patients that desire plaque and stain removal.
Dentist Review
Pros
Oral-B designed a comfortable, lightweight battery toothbrush that vibrates away plaque. The charcoal-infused bristles remove stains, are non-irritating and are pleasant to brush with because of the bristles’ round ends.
Its design is innovative as the brush head separates to wrap around all aspects of the teeth. The handle is comfortable to grip, and no slipping was observed. In addition, the teeth and gums felt clean as it’s effective at removing plaque and bacteria.
Cons
The bristles are stiff, and the brush head may be too large for individuals with smaller mouths. Also, it would have been nice if Oral-B had added a tongue scraper.
6. Best Sensitivity | Arm & Hammer Power Spinbrush
Arm & Hammer has been a trusted brand for more than 170 years. Most people know them by their “America’s #1 Trusted Baking Soda” brand; however, they expanded to oral health care.
Arm & Hammer is committed to being environmentally responsible and donates a portion of its profits to charities. The battery-powered Spinbrush offers exceptional cleaning with two variable moving brush heads.
Highlights
- ADA accepted
- Dual brush head action
- Soft bristles
- Specialty whitening cup
- Color wear bristle technology
Results
Best for patients that desire exceptional clean with changeable brush heads.
Dentist Review
Pros
The Spinbrush provided an exceptionally comprehensive clean. The dual brush head action cleaned all aspects of the teeth, and the variable bristle heights were a creative addition.
The specialty whitening cup was comfortable, and the soft bristles lived up to its name. In addition, the brush was lightweight and offered color wear technology bristles to remind you to change the brush head every three months.
Cons
The handle was a bit cumbersome and needed more grip to prevent slipping. Also, the toothbrush was loud; however, it’s a fair trade-off for how effective it cleans.
7. Best Gum Care | Oral-B Pro-Health Gum Care
The brand “trusted by dentists and consumers worldwide” offers many products to meet your unique oral care needs.
Oral-B is most well known for its electric toothbrush line; however, they have several manual and battery-powered toothbrushes.
Oral-B has partnered with Braun to develop a battery-powered toothbrush with replaceable brush heads.
Highlights
- Deep cleaning
- Ultrathin soft bristles
- Gentle on gums
- Powered by two batteries
- Rotating brush head
- Replacement brush heads
Results
Best for patients that desire a powerful deep clean.
Dentist Review
Pros
Oral-B and Braun have partnered to create a powerful and efficient toothbrush. The brush head has soft ultrathin bristles that slide between the teeth. Also, the small brush is easy to sneak around hard-to-reach areas.
The grip is comfortable, and no slipping occurred. The clean capability was effective and enjoyable.
Cons
The small brush head may be too small for some individuals. Also, the rotating brush head is a bit aggressive and may lead to gum recession after prolonged use. Lastly, the toothbrush is very loud when in use.
Overall Champion | Philips Sonicare One Power Toothbrush*
Designed with you in mind, Philips One is a big step up from manual brushing. Battery life up to 30 days!
Micro vibrations and tapered bristles made of soft nylon gently polish teeth for a brighter smile
The One is made to travel to get that clean feeling anywhere. It’s sleek and lightweight and fits neatly into a compact travel case.
Final Thoughts
Philips Sonicare One slightly edged out Arm & Hammer Spinbrush.
Philips Sonicare One is sleek, simple, travel-ready, and effectively cleaned. The bristles were soft and comfortable for the gums.
Also, the vibrating bristles are much friendlier than rotating brush heads. However, the Spinbrush is still a superior battery-powered toothbrush - and at a third of the price of the Sonicare One an excellent value.
The dynamic height bristles and dual-action brush head make it one of the best at cleaning away plaque and bacteria. Oral-B Pulsar Charcoal rounded out the top three with its uniquely designed split brush head and charcoal-infused bristles.
Any one of these three battery-powered toothbrushes would be a great addition to your brushing routine.
Final Rankings
- Philips Sonicare One Power Toothbrush 20/20
- Arm & Hammer Power Spinbrush 19/20
- Oral-B Pulsar Charcoal Power Toothbrush 18/20
- Colgate 360 Optic White Power Toothbrush 16/20
- Oral-B Pro-Health Gum Care Power Toothbrush 16/20
