Toothbrushes have greatly evolved over the years, from a simple toothbrush with uniform bristles, to a rechargeable one that pairs with your phone. Brushing habits are essential to promote healthy teeth, gums and prevent tooth decay. The original manual toothbrush requires patient compliance to adequately brush at a certain pace in order to remove plaque and bacteria.
Many individuals prefer this type of brush and are effective at keeping their teeth and gums healthy. Other individuals prefer an electric toothbrush because it does the majority of the work for them. Rather than having to scrub around in circles, an electric toothbrush is simply “walked” around each surface of the tooth. This limits excessive scrubbing that can damage gum tissue and lead to tooth sensitivity.

Electric toothbrushes offer various bristle styles and positions to clean different areas of the tooth. Also, many electric toothbrushes have multiple brushing modes and can be easily paired to your smartphone to verify effective brushing. Finding the right toothbrush will take you one step closer to managing your oral health. From a dentist’s perspective, let’s look at the best electric toothbrush under $50.

Pros
BURST Sonic Toothbrush is comfortable to grip and feels secure when brushing. The three different brushing modes are distinctly different, offering variability. Our favorite mode is the whitening mode, as it’s the most powerful. The subscription brush head model is great; you don’t have to remember when to replace it. Also, the feathered, charcoal-infused PBT bristles set this toothbrush apart from others. It’s incredibly gentle on the gums while still providing a great clean. In addition, the brush head is a great size and small enough to sneak around all aspects of the teeth. Lastly, the lifetime guarantee is reassuring, considering how often they are used.
Cons
It would be nice if it could be paired to your smartphone to verify the brushing technique. Also, the tongue and cheek cleaner is not as effective as we were hoping.
Best for patients with sensitive gums and desiring subscription service.

Pros
This toothbrush is lightweight and comfortable to grip. Variable, multi-level soft bristles were the highlight of this toothbrush. Each bristle tuft is uniquely positioned and is composed of various strengths and bristle materials. Again, Colgate was purposeful in this aspect of the toothbrush design. Bluetooth connectivity is another excellent feature that teaches you what spots were missed, coverage effectiveness, and overall duration. This perk makes brushing more enjoyable while also improving effectiveness. Lastly, the tongue and cheek cleaner was effective and thorough.
Cons
The brush head is on the smaller side, and the bristles minimally vibrate; however, vibrations may be more pronounced with the rechargeable option. Because of the minimal vibrations, the brushing effectiveness was less than we expected. Also, the bristles were stiff and slightly irritated the gum tissue.
Best for patients desiring bluetooth connectivity and travel-ready.

Pros
This toothbrush features unique sonic vibrations with four distinct brushing modes. The bristles visibly whip around and are incredibly effective at removing plaque. The brush head is well-designed with a gentle slope from edge to edge to clean in-between teeth. The bristles have excellent density and were intact after multiple uses. Also, the toothbrush has a thick, black satin handle that’s comfortable to hold and waterproof. Lastly, the travel case, eight extra DuPont brush heads, and a charging stand are much more than we expected for the price point.
Cons
AquaSonic left no stone unturned when designing this toothbrush. It’s exceptional across all aspects; however, we would have appreciated softer bristles as they were slightly stiff and irritating. Also, feathered tips would allow them to reach deep under the gum tissue.
Best for patients that desire multiple brushing modes and replacement heads.

Oral-B Pro 1000 Electric Toothbrush

Oral-B was founded in 1949 by a periodontist and his wife to create a safer and more effective toothbrush. They strategically place bristles on various aspects of the brush head to clean different areas of the tooth. The electric toothbrush line has many options with multiple price points, features, and connectivity. Let’s take a closer look at this functional electric toothbrush.
Highlights
- $39 per toothbrush
- 16 degree angled bristles

Pros
Oral-B has developed a strong reputation for its electric toothbrushes, and this product is no different. They’ve mastered the rotating brush head design to increase plaque removal effectiveness. The toothbrush is comfortable to hold, and the gripped handle prevents undesired slipping. The angled bristles reach deep between teeth and under gums. Also, the small, round brush head is the easiest to maneuver around back teeth. Another great perk is the interchangeable brush heads between any Oral-B toothbrush.
Cons
You either love or hate Oral-B’s well-known rotating brush head. However, after many days of use, we felt it was too abrasive to the teeth and gum tissue. It provides an exceptional clean experience, but excessive bristle movement may lead to gum recession. In addition, the pressure sensors slowed down the motor if you applied excess pressure.
Best for patients that desire round rotating, oscillating brush head.

Pros
Philips Sonicare DailyClean 1100 provided an exceptional clean due to its gentle pulsating sonic vibrations. The size of the brush head is ideal, and the contoured bristles are purposeful. The bristles are feathered for the extended reach between teeth and under the gum tissue. Also, the center bristles are slightly elevated to clean deep within your teeth’ central grooves (chewing surface). The handle is thick, comfortable to hold, and surprisingly lightweight.
Cons
This toothbrush is more straightforward than others; however, it’s also considerably cheaper. We would have expected more than one brushing mode, but we were pleased with the overall effectiveness. Also, a tongue and cheek cleaner would be an easy addition.
Best for patients looking for an effective and simple electric toothbrush.
Overall Champion: BURST Sonic Toothbrush*

BURST, AquaSonic and Philips Sonicare are all deserving of the top spot. Philips Sonicare is the most affordable option that features professional-level toothbrush effectiveness. If you want the most bang for your buck AquaSonic is the clear winner. It comes with a durable travel case (that fits two brush heads) and eight extra DuPont engineered replacement brush heads. The bristles were not as effective as BURST or Sonicare; however, they provided the most power, pumping out 40,000 vibrations/minute. Also, we can’t forget to mention the four different brushing modes. BURST barely edged out AquaSonic because of the soft charcoal-infused bristles, tongue cleaner, and subscription brush head feature. You won’t go wrong with any of the top 3 toothbrushes.
